Timber Assessment
Assessment of your timber's structural integrity

While your Mdu Probe is installed, your timber can have two assessments to determine the condition of the timber elements. The installer will give it a Visual Colour Rating (VCR) and perform a Timber Strength test (TeST) using a patented timber strength tester.

Visual Colour Rating (VCR)

A timber VCR provides immediate, critical information ‘at a glance' on the state of timber in any building. The drill shavings extracted from each tagged, probe point around the building are placed in a corresponding-numbered, transparent cell. Experienced timber experts can then give an immediate estimate of the condition of each sample and gain an overall visual impression of the whole building. Specific samples can subsequently be sent for laboratory testing. Mdu Technology® relies on a combination of the moisture reading from the Mdu Probe + the VCR + (in certain situations) the Timber Strength Tester. Clients intending to purchase a home can expect to have a +90% accurate assessment of the condition of the building OVERNIGHT. Additional testing would be undertaken in the event of remedial work being necessary.

Timber Strength Tester (TeST)

Timber Strength Tester: This patented device from Mdu Technology® uses the ancient science of levers – plus innovative thinking – to support or query a significant difference in reading between a moisture probe and the Visual Colour Rating (VCR), i.e. a high moisture reading and apparently sound timber, especially in situations where the building has been in existence for a number of years. A piston-like rod is inserted into the site of the probe, once it has been removed, and the head is expanded. Pressure is then applied to the lever handle and the timber strength is ascertained. The Timber Strength Tester is highly valued by the probe installers since it provides a basic technology proof to accompany the high-tech Mdu System's probes and the VCR.
